Most extremely popular fad diets are extremely restrictive – not just in terms of how many (or should I say “few”) calories you are allowed to consume, but also with regards to which food groups you can choose from. For instance, we have all heard of the “fat free” or “no carb” diets. But these restrictive diets are all extremely unhealthy, and are doomed to fail from the start! For starters, while starving your body on a 1000-calorie/day diet might make you lose weight (at least initially, until your body gives up on you), these “starvation” diets will only make your body fatter (and extremely tired/cranky) in the long run…
Blame your ancestors
Why?? Well, thanks to our ancient ancestors who often had difficulty finding enough food to eat, it is written into our human genetic code to “stock up” (ie. Build fat) when nutrients are scarce. Becoming more efficient at storing fat is your body’s natural method for survival, and it kicks into gear every time you ignore your body’s nutritional needs by starving it. Plus, skipping meals also slows down your metabolism, reduces fat-burning muscle tissue, increases belly fat, raises your desire for fatty foods, significantly increases your risk for heart disease, and leaves you with no energy to exercise! AHH! Now you can probably understand why losing weight gets harder and harder every time you diet by starving yourself… because your body becomes increasingly efficient at keeping weight ON.
How to break out of the diet cycle
But HOW can you break this seemingly endless cycle of weight loss and gain? Well, for starters, stop starving yourself! Your body and mind will only rebel against you and your weight loss goals if you don’t eat the right proportion of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fat (and the occasional dose of chocolate). So, start by giving your body what it NEEDS and be consistent about it! This means drinking lots of water (at least 6 – 8 glasses/day) to encourage fat loss and to keep muscles strong; eating small meals frequently to keep your metabolism and energy levels revved up 24-7; and including the proper amounts of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats in your diet.
Most importantly, you must not expect perfection! Nobody can be perfect 100% of the time; and the same holds true for your diet. That’s why my nutrition plan works so well for women – it follows the 90-10 principle, and plans for the other 10% to account for the occasional PMS chocolate craving, or that Friday night “coke and rum” you just have to have. In other words, my diet plan sets you up for SUCCESS from the very start by including what I like to call “planned failures”.
